I saw in our latest managers thread (since relegation) someone mention before Monk came in, we tried for Karl Robinson and Darrell Clarke. Grim.

Who are some other managers who came close to managing our great club? The obvious one is Martin O'Neill. Twice I recall.

We are back. Lets see what the season brings.  Excitement, disappointment, failure, success, highs, lows, ups and downs.....the only way we know for our Leeds United

I know there will be various ways to digest/watch/read the press conference, however i will stick to the usual format on here for the guys that don't have the social media access etc.

Signing you've been most excited by?
Probably been done but always interesting.

Personally was unbelievably excited by Fowler and Schmeichel.

Didn't expect us to get Schmeichel at all tbh.

***** Leeds v QPR Official Matchday Thread *****
Leeds United will be without attacking midfielder Pablo Hernandez, who has gone back to Spain as his wife is expecting their second child.

Defender Luke Ayling (ankle) could feature for the first time since January.

QPR boss Ian Holloway could give debuts to youngsters Giles Phillips and Charlie Owens.

Goalkeeper Matt Ingram could return to the squad after missing the win over Birmingham because of concussion.

SAM's prediction Home win 45% Draw 27% Away win 28% Match facts
Leeds are winless in their past three home league matches against the Hoops (D2 L1) since a 2-0 win in December 2010.
QPR have only lost one of their past seven league games against the Whites (W3 D3), but that defeat was in this season's reverse fixture.
Leeds have only lost one of their past 10 final league matches in a season (W5 D4), with each of their past four ending in draws.
When their final league match of a season has been away from home, QPR have lost seven of their past eight (W1), losing the past two by a four-goal margin to Leicester in 2014-15 (1-5) and Norwich last season (0-4).
Ian Holloway has lost six of his eight managerial trips to Elland Road (W1 D1), with his only win a 5-0 hammering with Blackpool in November 2011.
Luke Freeman has assisted 21% of QPR's 58 league goals this season (12 assists) - no player has assisted a higher percentage of their side's goals in the division.
Last game of a truly wretched season. The main positive is that it will be over today. QPR have a pretty poor away record but I remember them winning at Aston Villa this year. Would love to be confident of a win but can't say I am. Dire draw to finish in truly anti-climactic fashion, a world away from the free-flowing exciting football at Bolton on the opening day.

Leeds 1-1 QPR

Smith 41'
Roofe 70'

Paul Heckingbottom press conference - Pre QPR 04/05/18

Phil Hay
Heckingbottom: "I feel we've got really good players here but whatever team we put out we've got the same deficiencies. That's what we've got to change." #luf
PH: "We need time now to make changes, to get plans in place and develop a really clear picture of where we're going to go."
Heckingbottom admitted he's been disappointed with how this spell in charge has gone. "If you're not getting results, you're seen to be garbage at your job." Says he understands the scepticism amongst the supporters about him but is "clear on what needs to be done."
Pablo Hernandez has gone back to Spain with his wife due to give birth today.
Heckingbottom on Kyle Bartley: Said he's aware of how well he did here last season. "I know all about Kyle."
Heckingbottom on what needs to change/happen this summer: "I'm not going to expand on that now. We'll come to decisions as a club and then I'll tell you." #l
Heckingbottom says he's spoken to a small number of players who Leeds intend to move on in the summer. Would have liked to address it more thoroughly next week but conversations will be delayed while Leeds are in Myanmar.
Liam Cooper speaking now: says the Millwall defeat in September hit the players hard and they haven't ever truly recovered from that. On Heckingbottom, described him as a "very good coach
Cooper says it's been the most disappointing season he's had at Leeds. "I still go back to the start. It's hard to put your finger on why it's gone wrong.
Cooper: "We're going to dwell on this all summer. It will be really hard.
Cooper says that with hindsight the Millwall game showed Leeds could be bullied and teams worked out how to play against them. Thinks this season will have taught some in the squad how to cope in the Championship. #l
Cooper says the blame for results should lie with the players, rather than Heckingbottom. But doesn't think there's an attitude problem in the squad. "No-one goes out there wanting to lose."

Where is Pontus Jansson?
Right now we need leaders and leaders to stand up and show us the way.

Pontus, this is the role you gave yourself, when times were good. Where are you? Where are you now? Be a man, show yourself and stop hiding.

Phil Hay tweeting that clubs will vote on keeping match day programs.

"Quite interesting in a peripheral way - EFL clubs to vote this summer on whether producing match-day programmes should remain a mandatory requirement. Some evidently think it's no longer worth it. Sign of the times."

Do you still buy them.

Every year at this time , the manager/coach along with the M.D and owner tell us it will be better next year with better recruitment. We all buy season tickets in hope ( because we want it to be true) then summer arrives we shop in the bargain basement again due to not paying decent wages. The following season is done by feb and we get told the same again regardless of owner. Only last year did we keep a season alive past February and still managed to screw it up at the death.
11/12 - 14th place finish ,but warnock told us he would give us a promotion campaign and a side to be proud of !!
12/13 warnock side to be proud of finished 13th after he was sacked and McDermott won 3 of last 5 games. Gfh told us Bates was gone and they would back their man.
13/14 - big bri had to beg / steal and borrow to get some funds and gfh gave us Noel hunt , Luke Murphy and Scott wootton!! Finishing 15th. Cellino tells us to have faith now he is driving the bus and it will be promotion within 2 years.
14/15- cellino’s cheap European recruitment means we never climb above 12th all season finishing in 15th. However in may adam Pearson tells us things will improve and we are going quality over quantity and with 4/5 top signings we can have a good season.
15-16- the big signings were Stuart Dallas and Chris Wood , slow start means big fat Steve is given the reins and Pearson fucks off in September. We finish 13th!! However massimo promises money back next year if we don’t make top 6!! This time we must be going for it.
16-17 - massimo does seem to take a back seat we seem to recruit wisely even though most are on loan and we buck the recent trend , only to fall apart in April to finish 7th. This time no incentive needed , new owner ( not a crook) buys back ground and tells us top 6 minimum target. Tickets fly out.
17-18. - wood, Taylor , green , bridcutt and Bartley have been replaced by people from the Albanian league etc. After a bright start we sit 13th in April on a run of 2 wins in 17 games. But the jungle drums from Angus as told us to expect an exciting summer as lessons have been learned.

No lessons are ever learned, apart from a brief flicker last year it’s been one massive shit storm since Grayson went close in 10/11 season. Fuck me this cycle is boring Leeds , just stop spouting shit and deliver or at least be honest and say we hope to do ok each year but as we can’t spend big we are going to lower the prices you have to pay to watch the fucking shit we serve up!! Ha ha

Pontus Jansson is falling down
What is going on with him constantly going to ground and laying there for ages? It looked soft as fuck for him to go down and then get stretchered off.

Does he simply not fancy it anymore, looks it to me.

Post in How do we get rid of our useless players?
Felix Wieldwald  - Simply has to go and clearly is going. Think he will quickly end up back in DIV2 in Germany no doubt, doubt any top level German clubs will touch him.

Andy Lonergan contract  2019 - BPF been superb for me, done his best to push for number, unless we bring in someone like Westwood, McCarthy etc he's number 1, so Lonergan can be backup.

Vuron Anita contract  2020 - Unless they are going to play him at CM and just see he is useless to us, has absolutely no pace, so badly exposed at RB or LB. Imagine he's on decent wages too, bet he goes to Turkey or somewhere this summer.

Laurens De Bock contract  - Fuck knows about this lad, he looks totally garbage can't see anyone taking him, imagine were stuck with him.

Ezgjan Alioski contract  2021 - Constantly fucking diving about, we were sold that he had pace but he never actually goes passed his man. Wouldn't care if he goes, imagine if he does he will end up in Italy or somewhere.

Kalvin Phillips contract 2021 - Have him as back-up but literally just that, nowhere near good enough to be near starting 11.

Hadi Sacko contract 2020 - Brain dead, completely brain dead, we have to get rid of him somehow but another I struggle to see us shifting.

Jay Roy Grot contract 2021 - Sick of this he's young shite, had decent opportunities and showed he isn't a footballer, not one iota of skill or footballing mind, total dud.

Pawel Cibicki contract 2021 - Too lightweight, not good enough for Championship, imagine he will get taken by a Swedish team this summer.

Caleb Ekuban contract 2021- 24 years old, just isn't a natural finisher or at least not quick enough to take slim chances offered in Championship. Imagine he stays here as back up.

***** Leeds v Cardiff Official Matchday Thread *****
Leeds United remain without the suspended Liam Cooper, Kalvin Phillips, Eunan O'Kane and Samu Saiz.
Conor Shaughnessy (ankle) is set to be out for several weeks and new signing Tyler Roberts will not make his debut as he has a knock.

Cardiff could give debuts to new signings Gary Madine and Jamie Ward.

Full-back Joe Bennett serves a one-match ban for his red card in the FA Cup defeat by Manchester City on Sunday.

SAM's prediction Home win 38% Draw 28%
Away win 34%

SAM, the Sports Analytics Machine, is a super-computer built by @ProfIanMcHale of the University of Liverpool.
Match facts
Leeds have won one of their last 10 home league games against Cardiff (D3 L6), winning 1-0 courtesy of an Alex Mowatt strike in November 2015.
Cardiff have not conceded more than once in any of their last 12 league trips to Elland Road (seven conceded in total) since a 3-0 defeat in April 1963.
Since a run of four successive league wins, Leeds United have picked up just two points in their last five games (D2 L3), failing to score on four occasions in this run.
Cardiff have conceded 56% of their league goals in the last 30 minutes this season; only opponents Leeds (58%) have recorded a higher percentage.
Leeds have lost 11 of the 12 games they have fallen behind in this season in the Championship (92%); the worst such percentage in the competition.
Since leaving Leeds in April 2013, Neil Warnock has faced his former club four times and won all four matches, two of which have been with Cardiff.
Grim reaper Neil Warnock comes to town. Gulp. Can't say I'm at all confident. What is our identity at the minute ? Keeping 11 men on the pitch at Hull was an achievement which says it all. Feel we'll get bullied all over the pitch. Fairies likes Alioski & Roofe really need to be in for a physical battle, which I don't see happening. Shithouse Gary Madine to get the winner.

Leeds 0-1 Cardiff

Madine 62'

*****Official Hull City v Leeds United Matchday Thread*****
Go on then, I'll do it again.

Hull City midfielder Kamil Grosicki could make his first start since Boxing Day after coming off the bench in the FA Cup win over Nottingham Forest.
The Tigers are outside the relegation zone on goal difference and have not won in the league since 9 December.
Leeds United are missing Liam Cooper, Kalvin Phillips, Eunan O'Kane and Samu Saiz through suspension.
Midfielder Adam Forshaw could make his debut after joining from Middlesbrough earlier this month.
SAM's prediction Home win 46% Draw 28% Away win 26% SAM, the Sports Analytics Machine, is a super-computer built by @ProfIanMcHale of the University of Liverpool.
Match facts
Hull are unbeaten in four home league meetings with Leeds (W1 D3) since a 2-1 defeat in January 2007. Leeds have not done a league double over the Tigers since the 1989/90 campaign under Howard Wilkinson - the last season in which they won promotion to the top-flight. Hull City have failed to score in six of their last seven league games, only scoring against Fulham in their 2-2 draw with Fulham in December. This will be Nigel Adkins' fourth home league meeting with Leeds (W2 D0 L1 previously), all against different managers - Gary McAllister (August 2008), Simon Grayson (August 2011), Brian McDermott (September 2013) and Thomas Christiansen this time. Leeds United have been given a red card in each of their three games in all competitions, losing all three - indeed the Whites have received red cards in six games this season (W1 D0 L5). Hull have won five Championship games this season, all against sides beginning with B - in games against sides not beginning with B, they have collected 10 points from a possible 63 (P21 W0 D10 L11).
1-0 to the tiger cubs for me unfortunately.

have we lost a generation?
I was thinking about this will sobering up today. Next year is 15 years since dropping out of the Premier league. There is lots of research to show that the target age of people getting interested in Football and choosing their team is 7 years old.  This is why loads of football club do free tickets/free shirts/make a big fuss for people turning 7.

7 +15 means the last target group to have Leeds as a premier league club will be 22 next season. A 7 year old when we won the title in 1991/1992 season will be 33 next season.

It has been a long an desolate time away from the big time.  Will we ever get back or are we destined to become a lower league club for eternity? Its a bit of a depressive thought.

Memorable LUFC defeats in European competition
I was looking at some old European games from the mid nineties and remembered one attended in 1995.  It was the 3-5 versus PSV Eindhoven.

I remember it being a crazy game.  3-1 down at half time and pullled it back to 3-3 and wild scenes.  Then a few minutes of madness to lose 3-5.

it was, I believe the only time we conceded 5 goals in a European game.

Despite the the bad result I remember it  being of my favourite games.  PSV Eindhoven were a class act in attack.  Great goals from both sides, but Nillis was brilliant for them.

So so that remains my favourite game in europe that Leeds lost at Elland Road

As an aside, I just checked how many European games LUFC have played and was surprised how relatively few, although back in those days it wasn’t so easy to qualify as it is now and it was more of a knockout thing.

We've had 148 games in total in European competition.  The home PSV deserts in 95 was our hundredth game.

What are your memories of famous defeats in Europe?  Favourite defeat (as perverse at that sounds).

It's not going to happen is it?
Maybe it because I've had a few beers on a Sunday night but it's just not going to happen is it?

It's great that we own the ground again but the rest is just a mis-mash.  Still an unbalanced squad, a questionable Manager and Orta in charge of transfers.  I just can't see us ever attaining the mythical land of the premiership again. Soon it'll be 20 years since to flight football.  Radzs might get disillusioned and sell up and we're still be stuck in  the 2nd tier.

It's beyond a joke and I'm not even a depressive drunk.

Clubs Transfer Strategy
I see all the fans suggesting we need to be patient, "The club is building for the long term with youth" etc  but I just don't think it will work at this level , certainly not in terms of getting us promoted

Every summer we simply lose our best players, last time it was Wood and Taylor, next time Jansson and Saiz  ?    I would argue that as it stands we are no further forward than we were last season and if any of these youth players become gems in the rough then at some point in the near future they will simply be purchased by premier league clubs

I don't even think its just about money spent, look at Huddesfeild, they brought in 3 or 4 loanees who were essentially good enough to make the jump to the premiership and then also brought in a couple of talented permanents that also successfully made the jump up a division. They didn't spend a fortune to do it. Its simply about bringing in talented players straight in to the first team and being single minded about it

Maybe Leeds strategy is simply to buy cheap and sell big and profit out of it like Cellino, pocketing the profit every year, maybe they arnt bothered about promotion ?

P>S this isn't a transfer wish list or just a general gripe its a specific concern about our transfer strategy , that's why I posted it as a new topic, hope that's ok for all the self important keyboard warriors on here.

Are you one of the 10,000 ?
First thing I want to say is that Radrizanni and Kinnear have done some really good things for Leeds United Football club so far.
With this new badge however, they have missed the target by a country mile. They seemingly fail to understand that the club badge has to be an emblem to unite behind, a coat of arms for Leeds United if you like, this looks like something designed for Roy of the Rovers , Melchester Uniteds club crest.
It is simply awful, tacky and amateurish and an own goal at the time when we are living in hope that what they actually do is get on with giving us a team to be proud of. Not the team I watched in the first half last Saturday or the team that lost to Newport County. We don’t need this type of publicity to be honest and I hope that they reconsider.
Anyway, getting to the point of my post, the club say they consulted 10,000 fans in the designing of this badge, was anyone on WACCOE involved, or anyone they know ?  No-One I know has mentioned a word.
